Awal Muharram, the first day of Muharram, is the Islamic New Year. It is a reflective public holiday observed quietly by Muslim families across Malaysia. Our role at a craft cocktail bar on this date is straightforward: the NA programme leads. Serious mocktails, brewed teas, single-origin coffee, served with the same craft and glassware as the regular menu. Alcohol stays on the back bar for guests who are not observing. The room is small, the music is softer than a Friday, and the night belongs to whoever wants to sit and talk.
Awal Muharram in the Malaysian context
Awal Muharram opens the Islamic lunar calendar. The month of Muharram itself is one of the four sacred months in Islam, a period associated with restraint, prayer, and renewal of intention. For most Muslim Malaysians the day is observed privately at home: morning prayers, doa awal tahun (the new-year supplication), often a quiet family meal, frequently reading or reflection rather than celebration.
It is not a fireworks night. There are no open houses on the scale of Aidilfitri, no parades the way Maulidur Rasul carries in some states. The official public holiday status simply makes the day available for rest and reflection. Many families also mark Maal Hijrah events at mosques in the evening, particularly the recitation gatherings for the doa akhir tahun and doa awal tahun (the supplications closing the old year and opening the new).
For non-Muslim Malaysians the holiday provides a quiet weekday off. Streets in central Kuala Lumpur thin out by mid-evening. KL Sentral and the Bukit Bintang strip are quieter than a normal Wednesday or Thursday. Many bars in the city dim their music down. Mixed-faith friend groups, who would normally pick a noisier room, often look for somewhere considered. A small craft bar with a serious NA programme is the right kind of neutral venue for that.
Why the bar can host you on Awal Muharram
The bar's role on a reflective Islamic holiday is to host non-drinking guests with the same care as drinking guests. That sounds basic. In practice many cocktail bars treat the non-alcoholic side as the afterthought: one sweet mocktail on the menu, sometimes none, often served in a different glass to a different rhythm. Dissolved Solids has built a real NA programme on the back of years of competition work, and it sits at the front of the bar on observance days.
For Awal Muharram specifically: the NA programme is the default lead. The bartender opens with the brewed-tea menu and the NA cocktail list. Cocktails appear only if guests indicate they want them. Glassware matches across both sides. No announcement is made when an alcoholic and an NA drink land at the same table. Music sits softer than the room's usual register. The team is briefed to slow service down a notch and let conversation lead.
What to order on Awal Muharram (NA programme first)
The Awal Muharram NA list leans warm-spiced and floral. Reflective, not celebratory. Listed first because this is what the day calls for.
Black Honey: espresso, dark honey, citrus, NA aromatics. The signature NA coffee mocktail.
Floral Mango: ripe Malaysian mango, jasmine tea infusion, lime. Fresh-fruit anchor on the NA list.
NA Negroni: non-alcoholic aperitivo base, NA bitter, blood orange. Stirred, served on a single rock.
Pandan Collins NA: pandan-leaf cordial, citrus, soda, served tall. Quietly Malaysian.
Cardamom and Honey Tea Cocktail: brewed cardamom tea, honey, lemon, ice. Warm-spiced and contemplative.
Rose and Saffron Cooler: rose syrup, saffron tincture, lemon, soda. Floral, gently aromatic.
Karak Chai or Kopi-O: proper cardamom-led milk tea, or cold-brewed kopi-O with gula melaka in a coupe. Brewed-drink anchors.
For non-observant guests, the regular cocktail list is available. Negroni, Old Fashioned, Spritz, Tesseract. The bar runs both sides in matching glassware.
The Awal Muharram evening plan
Daytime: family-led observance. Morning prayers, doa awal tahun, quiet meals at home.
Late afternoon, 17:00 onwards: some Maal Hijrah mosque programmes begin. Streets remain quiet.
Evening at the bar, 20:00 to 22:30: one or two NA cocktails or coffees, a small plate, conversation. Both Petaling Jaya outlets are 15 to 25 minutes by Grab from central Kuala Lumpur. The room is small. The lighting is low. Plan to stay for the talk, not the rounds.
Last orders: Dissolved Solids closes at 01:00 (Tuesday to Sunday). Soluble Solids closes at 01:00 (Wednesday to Sunday). Awal Muharram is usually a quiet evening that ends earlier than weekend nights.
The Petaling Jaya alternative for KL guests
Both outlets sit in Petaling Jaya. From central Kuala Lumpur:
- Dissolved Solids · Damansara Kim: small upstairs bar at 43-1 Jalan SS20/11. Quiet by default. Tuesday to Sunday, 15:00 to 01:00.
- Soluble Solids · SS2: the smaller second outlet at 50-1 Jalan SS2/24. No printed menu. Wednesday to Sunday, 18:00 to 01:00. NA programme as default on Awal Muharram.
Halal-friendly status and observance respect
Both outlets serve no pork and no lard. The kitchen runs a small snack programme; alcohol and food preparation are clearly separated. Neither outlet currently holds a JAKIM halal certificate, so we describe the kitchen as halal-friendly rather than certified halal. If your group needs strict halal certification, we will say so plainly and you can decide whether the kitchen meets your standard.
The NA cocktail programme uses no alcoholic spirits and no alcoholic bitters. NA Negroni, NA Spritz, Black Honey, Floral Mango, Pandan Collins NA, Peach Blossom, Floral Bloom, brewed teas, and coffee builds are all alcohol-free. The bar team can talk through any specific ingredient if asked.

Frequently asked questions
Can I come in just for non-alcoholic drinks on Awal Muharram?
Yes. The NA programme is the default lead on this date. Order only mocktails, coffee, or tea and the round comes out with the same care and glassware as the alcoholic side. No upsell.
Is the food halal-friendly?
The snack menu contains no pork and no lard, and alcohol service is clearly separated. We do not hold a JAKIM halal certificate; we describe the kitchen as halal-friendly rather than certified halal. Ask the bartender about any specific ingredient.
Do I have to order alcohol if my friends are drinking?
No. The bartender pours one observant guest a NA Negroni, another a Black Honey, another a karak chai. The glassware matches. Nobody announces which is which.
What time should we arrive on Awal Muharram?
Awal Muharram is a quiet evening. A relaxed window is 20:00 to 22:00. Walk-ins generally work; for groups of four or more, WhatsApp the outlet.
Is the bar suitable for older family members?
Yes. Music sits at conversation volume and lower on observance evenings. The room is small and lit softly. Older relatives who prefer karak chai, kopi-O, or sirap selasih are well served.
Where is the Kuala Lumpur visit actually held?
Both outlets sit in Petaling Jaya, 15 to 25 minutes by Grab from central Kuala Lumpur. The KL guide is the journey plan.
Will the bar push us to order alcohol?
No. The NA programme is the primary menu, not the consolation. The bar team is briefed to lead with mocktails and brewed drinks on Awal Muharram and not to suggest alcoholic substitutes.
