If you are visiting KL and want the cocktail bar evening that locals actually do, you need to leave KLCC. The downtown rooftop venues are built for tourist photographs; they are loud, expensive, and the cocktails are not the point. The serious owner-operated cocktail bars are 20 to 25 minutes west of KLCC, in Petaling Jaya, where rent allows the bartender to focus on the drink instead of the room rate. This page is a working visitor guide to both our PJ outlets.

Why locals drink in PJ, not KLCC

Three structural reasons:

Lower rent. A 50-seat shoplot bar in PJ costs roughly 40 to 60 percent of the equivalent in KLCC. That saving goes into spirit selection, bartender training, glassware, and ice quality rather than into interior splash. KLCC rooftop bars compensate for high rent by charging RM 60 to RM 90 per cocktail; PJ small bars charge RM 38 to RM 48 for cocktails of equivalent or higher quality.

Easier parking and cheaper Grabs. PJ commercial zones have free street parking after 18:00. Grab fares within PJ are RM 8 to RM 15; KLCC to anywhere is RM 12 to RM 30 with surge. The transport cost difference compounds across an evening.

Less performance, more focus. KLCC rooftop bars are venues. PJ owner-operated bars are workshops. The bartender at a PJ small bar will know your drink, modify it on the fly, and recommend the next round based on what they observed of the first. KLCC rooftop bartenders are running production at scale.

Our two PJ outlets

Dissolved Solids · Damansara Kim. 43-1 Jalan SS20/11. Coffee cocktail bar and cafe. Open 14:00 or 15:00 to 00:00 (01:00 Friday and Saturday), closed Mondays. Five signature coffee cocktails (Kopi Sour, Espresso Martini, Black Honey, Too Gouda To Be True, plus seasonal variations) alongside classics and Malaysian-local pours. Small dark room up a flight of stairs. WhatsApp: +60 11-4008 7607.

Soluble Solids · SS2. 50-1 Jalan SS2/24. No-menu customised cocktail parlour. Open 18:00 to 01:00 Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday. The bartender asks three questions (strength, base spirit, flavour profile) and builds your drink from a wall of labelled infusion jars. Smaller room, more intimate. WhatsApp: +60 11-1682 8651.

Both are one of Tatler Asia Top 20 Bars 2025/26 (ranked #6 in 2025 and #9 in 2026).

The visitor evening plan

A version of the visit that locals would do, adapted for someone staying in KLCC or Bukit Bintang.

17:30 to 18:30: Late lunch or early dinner in KL before the drive. Suggestions: Lot 10 hawker centre in Bukit Bintang, or anywhere on Jalan Alor for street food. Eat substantial; the evening will be long.

18:30 to 19:00: Grab from your hotel to Dissolved Solids in Damansara Kim. Off-peak fare from KLCC: RM 20 to RM 28. Friday and Saturday between 17:00 and 19:30 the drive is slower; budget 35 minutes.

19:00 to 20:30: Two drinks at Dissolved Solids. Start with a Calamansi Highball (Malaysian-local citrus long drink) and a Kopi Sour (whisky and kopi-O coffee). The bartender will recommend the build for the second round.

20:30 to 21:00: Walk-and-Grab transition to Soluble Solids in SS2. 12 minutes by Grab.

21:00 to 22:30: One custom-built drink at Soluble Solids. Tell the bartender it is your first visit and you want them to surprise you with something that uses Malaysian ingredients.

22:30 onwards: Grab back to your KL hotel. 22 to 28 minute drive. Fare RM 30 to RM 50 with surge.

What to order if you only have one drink

If you can only stop in for one drink during a short KL visit, pick one of these:

Pandan Collins at Dissolved Solids. Gin, fresh pandan syrup, lime, soda. Pandan is the Southeast Asian "vanilla", vegetal, fragrant, used in Malaysian desserts. The Collins format makes it bright and refreshing. Our most-ordered Malaysian-local long drink.

Kopi Sour at Dissolved Solids. Whisky, kopi-O (Malaysian black coffee), gula melaka (palm sugar), lemon, optional foam. The Malaysian whisky sour. Carries the actual flavour of Malaysian coffee culture. Hard to find outside this region.

Surprise me at Soluble Solids. Tell the bartender the truth: you are visiting, you want them to choose, you want it to taste of Malaysia. They will build something specific to that brief.

Payment, tipping, and small etiquette

Cards work. Both bars take Visa, Mastercard, most debit cards, DuitNow QR, and Touch n Go eWallet. No card surcharge.

Tipping is not expected. The bill already includes 10 percent service. Round up RM 5 to RM 10 if you really enjoyed the bartender's work, but it is genuinely not expected.

Conversation with the bartender is welcomed. Both bars are owner-operated and the people behind the counter are usually the people who built the bar. Ask what they like to pour; ask about Malaysian ingredients; ask for a recommendation. This is the format.

Bring an umbrella from May to November. Klang Valley afternoon thunderstorms are sudden and heavy. The walk from Grab to bar door is the wet part; the rooms are fully air-conditioned and dry.

For groups visiting together

For 3 to 4 visitors travelling together, WhatsApp the bar 24 hours ahead. We will reserve adjacent counter seats or a small table. The split-cost economics work well: at RM 38 to RM 48 per cocktail and shared snacks, a group of 4 with 8 total cocktails and snacks runs RM 600 to RM 800 plus service, which divides to RM 150 to RM 200 each. Cheaper than dinner at a KLCC hotel restaurant.
