Deepavali (the Festival of Lights) is the night Hindu households across Kuala Lumpur fill with diyas, kolam, and the smell of cardamom on milk. A cocktail bar that takes Deepavali seriously builds drinks from those same flavours: cardamom, rose, saffron, jaggery, masala chai, fresh ginger. Not all KL bars do. Here is how to find the ones that do.
Deepavali and the night around it
Deepavali (also called Diwali) usually falls in October or November. In Malaysia it is a public holiday. KL goes loud during the day: open-house lunches, street decorations in Brickfields and Little India, lights everywhere. By evening the city quiets and the date-and-friends visits begin.
The cocktail bar fits in the evening slot. After the open-house lunch, after the family rounds, before bed.
The Deepavali flavour palette
Drinks that feel like Deepavali use:
- Cardamom: green and black, in syrup or infused.
- Rose: rose syrup, rose water, dried rose petals.
- Saffron: in syrup, in cream, in milk.
- Jaggery: Indian unrefined cane sugar, similar register to gula melaka.
- Masala chai: the spice mix in syrup form, or the brewed chai itself.
- Fennel, clove, nutmeg, black pepper: the warm spice register.
- Mango, fig, pomegranate: the fruit side.
What to order on Deepavali in KL
Cardamom Old Fashioned: bourbon, cardamom-jaggery syrup, aromatic bitters. The signature pour for the night.
Rose Lassi Cocktail: gin, rose syrup, plain yogurt, cardamom, lemon. Lassi, in a coupe.
Saffron Negroni: gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, saffron tincture. The Negroni's Diwali outfit.
Masala Chai Espresso Martini: vodka, kahlua, fresh-brewed masala chai (cooled), demerara. The crossover hit.
Pomegranate Sour: gin, fresh pomegranate juice, lemon, rose syrup, egg white. Photographs as Diwali-red.
Mango Lassi Martini: vodka, mango puree, plain yogurt, cardamom, sugar.
Bombay Highball: Bombay Sapphire (or any London Dry), tonic, fresh ginger, cardamom syrup, lime.
The Petaling Jaya alternative
If you are in KL and want a quieter Deepavali cocktail, PJ is 15-25 minutes by Grab. Our outlets:
Dissolved Solids · Damansara Kim: small upstairs bar on Jalan SS20/11. Cardamom, rose, and chai feature on the bar through Deepavali week.
Soluble Solids · SS2: small room, no printed menu. Tell the bartender it is Deepavali; ask for a Diwali-coded build. We carry rose syrup, cardamom, masala chai syrup, and a quiet supply of saffron through October-November.
For non-drinking guests
Deepavali brings out a wider non-drinking crowd than most other public holidays. Some Hindus abstain from alcohol on Deepavali itself or during the broader Diwali week. The NA programme matters:
- NA cardamom highball: cardamom syrup, lemon, soda, ice.
- NA rose lassi: rose syrup, plain yogurt, cardamom, milk, ice.
- Iced masala chai: proper masala chai, cooled, with jaggery and milk.
- Pomegranate cooler: fresh pomegranate, lime, soda.
- Mango lassi: mango, yogurt, cardamom, sugar.
- NA saffron lemonade: saffron syrup, lemon, soda.
The Deepavali evening plan
Open-house rounds, daytime: family and friend visits. Eat the laddu, the murukku, the ghee sweets.
Dinner, 7pm-9pm: South Indian (banana leaf) or North Indian (tandoor) restaurant. Brickfields, SS17, or wherever you usually go.
Cocktail bar, 9pm-11pm: the bar with the Deepavali-coded programme. Cardamom Old Fashioned, Rose Lassi Cocktail.
Optional second drink, 11pm-midnight: a chai espresso martini if you still want the festival on your palate, or something quieter.
Reservations
Deepavali night is not as crowded as Valentine's or New Year's, but the South Indian restaurants book out fully. The cocktail bars are normally available with 2-3 days notice.
