PJ small bars are not built like the larger central-KL group-bar venues. The rooms are smaller, the staff smaller, the bartender often a one-person show. Groups can absolutely work here, but only if the bar knows you are coming. Brief in advance and a 6-12 person hangout at a craft PJ bar is excellent. Walk in cold with 10 friends on a Friday night and it will go poorly.
The intent: work friends, reunions, gatherings of 4 to 20
A group hangout at a PJ small bar is fundamentally a logistics question. The cocktails are easy (the bar has a real programme), the room is fine (warm, comfortable, conversation-friendly), the pace is good (three rounds across three hours). What makes or breaks the evening is whether the bar knows you are coming with 10 people. Briefed in advance, a small PJ craft bar is one of the strongest group-hangout formats in the Klang Valley. Unbriefed, it falls apart fast.
The thing the group hangout needs first is the seating layout. A 30-seat bar configured for couples cannot accommodate 10 people; we need to set up the long table or combine two bar-counter sections. This takes 20 minutes to do before service; if we know you're coming we'll have it ready. If you walk in, the configuration won't be there.
The second thing it needs is the ingredient prep. A group of 10 with four Negronis on round one needs four times the sweet vermouth, plus the Campari, plus the gin. Without notice we stock for the regular Friday flow; we might run out of vermouth on round two and have to substitute. With 3-5 days notice we adjust the prep.
The third is pace expectation. A bartender pacing 10 different walk-in drinks takes about 35 minutes for round one. A bartender pacing 10 pre-known group drinks takes 18-22 minutes. The difference shows up in the group's experience: a 35-minute round one means people are watching empty glasses for 15 minutes; a 20-minute round one keeps the energy.
Brief in advance and the small-bar PJ group hangout is excellent. Walk in cold and it is patchy.
Why our two bars suit a 4-12 person group
Both Dissolved Solids and Soluble Solids handle groups well with advance notice. Larger groups are a buyout.
Dissolved Solids · Damansara Kim (43-1 Jalan SS20/11, Tue-Sun 15:00 to 01:00) is the better choice for 6-12 person groups. About 30 seats. Groups fit on the long table or by combining bar-counter sections. The room is warm-lit and the bartender can run multiple drinks in parallel. Bar snacks available (cheese, charcuterie, olives, nuts, popcorn).
Soluble Solids · SS2 (50-1 Jalan SS2/24, Wed-Sun 18:00 to 01:00) is the smaller venue, best for groups up to 8. The bespoke build format works for groups who want a curated experience. Listed as one of Tatler Asia Top 20 Bars 2025/26.
Why brief us in advance, even for a casual hangout
A craft cocktail bar at 30 seats can absolutely handle 10 of you, but only if we know you are coming. Three practical reasons:
- Seating layout. If we know it is 10, we will set up the long table or combine bar-counter sections. If we do not, you arrive to a configuration meant for couples.
- Ingredient prep. If the group is 10 and four of you are going to order Negronis, we want to make sure we have enough sweet vermouth on the night. Without notice, we might run out mid-round-two.
- Pace expectations. The bartender can pace a group's first round more efficiently if they know the group exists. 10 drinks made at once takes 18-22 minutes; 10 drinks made as walk-ins takes 35.
The PJ group-friendly small-bar setup
For groups of 4-6: most small PJ craft bars can handle this with 24 hours notice.
For groups of 7-12: 5-7 days notice. The bar will set aside a section.
For groups of 13+: a partial or full buyout. See private events.
What to order for a PJ group hangout
Round one parallel, rounds two and three clustered. Worth seeding the table with these:
Negroni. Gin, Campari, sweet vermouth. The classic that anchors a serious cocktail group order. Multiple people will gravitate to it.
French 75. Gin, lemon, sugar, sparkling. Celebratory opener for the lighter drinkers.
Pandan Collins. Gin, pandan, lemon, soda. Long, low-ABV, Malaysian. Good for the lighter drinkers in the group.
Aviation. Gin, maraschino, creme de violette, lemon. Photogenic. Has a story the bartender can tell across the table.
Gula Melaka Old Fashioned. Bourbon, gula melaka, aromatic bitters. The Malaysian-local Old Fashioned. Travels well across the group.
Scented Negroni. Our house Negroni variant, floral-aromatic. The "you have to try this" order for the curious.
Kopi Sour. Whisky, espresso, lemon, sugar, egg-white. The "everyone wants one" drink for round three.
Local Tropic. Rum, tropical-fruit, citrus, spice. The longer, gentler option.
Group ordering strategy
Round one is the slowest. 10 people, 10 different drinks, takes 18-22 minutes. Order at the table, not the bar. The bartender will batch by drink type (all the Negronis together, all the sours together).
Round two is "cluster". By round two, the group has identified 2-3 drinks people are gravitating to. "Three more Old Fashioneds, two more Negronis, two Aperol Spritzes." Faster.
Round three: tell the bartender to surprise the table. They will pour something interesting on the bar's own taste. This is the moment of the night where the bar earns its keep.
Snacks: we have a small bar-snack menu (cheese, charcuterie, olives, nuts, popcorn). Order one or two boards per six people for the long sessions.
Our two PJ outlets, for groups
Dissolved Solids · Damansara Kim: small upstairs bar above MyNews on Jalan SS20/11. We can seat groups of 6-12 by combining the long table with adjacent bar-counter sections. Capacity is about 30 total, so a group of 12 is a third of the room. We brief the rest of the room (regulars who reserve the same night) that a private-ish group will be there.
Soluble Solids · SS2: the smaller of the two. We can host groups up to 8 comfortably; 10 is the absolute max. No printed menu. The bartender will brief on the format before you arrive.
The PJ group hangout evening plan, hour by hour
Dinner first, 6:30pm-8:30pm. A restaurant nearby. PJ has many group-friendly Chinese, Indian, Western, and Malaysian restaurants. Walk to the bar after.
Bar round one, 9pm-9:45pm. Arrive, settle, first drinks, bar snacks. Catch-up conversation.
Bar round two, 10pm-10:45pm. Cluster round. Conversation deepens or branches into sub-clusters.
Bar round three or wind-down, 11pm-midnight. Bartender's choice or the wind-down drinks. Most PJ small bars close at midnight or 01:00.
For non-drinkers in the group
The NA programme at a serious small bar is real. Same glassware, same care. The non-drinker should never get the lesser version.

- NA Negroni: Seedlip + NA Campari + NA vermouth.
- NA Old Fashioned: NA whisky + demerara + bitters.
