1Utama is one of the largest malls in Malaysia, and Bandar Utama as a whole is one of the higher-density commercial blocks in PJ. People search for cocktail bars near 1Utama for two reasons: they are spending the afternoon in the mall and want a drink to end the day, or they live in Bandar Utama and want a serious drink without driving into KL. Both questions have the same answer.

The honest map

1Utama itself has a small handful of bars inside the mall, most of them lounge-shaped, not cocktail-focused. The serious cocktail rooms are not in the mall. They are a 10-15 minute drive away, in the older PJ commercial blocks.

The closest serious cocktail bar is Dissolved Solids in Damansara Kim, 12 minutes by car. Our sister bar Soluble Solids in SS2 is 15 minutes. Both are bright on the cocktail front and quieter than anything inside the mall.

The drive from 1Utama

To Dissolved Solids: Exit 1Utama via Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) heading toward Bandar Sunway. Take the Damansara Utama exit. Two left turns into SS20. Total: 12 minutes off-peak, 16 minutes during Friday-evening traffic.

To Soluble Solids: Same route to Damansara Utama. Continue south through Section 17 into SS2. Total: 15 minutes off-peak.

Both routes are well-signposted. Both bars have free street parking after 18:00.

Why drive out instead of staying at the mall

Three reasons we hear:

1. Quieter rooms. Mall bars have to absorb foot traffic from the mall. Our outlets are dedicated cocktail bars; the only people in the room are people who came specifically to drink. The volume sits where it should, under conversation, not over it.

2. Specialised drinks. Mall lounges tend to keep a long, generic drinks list that covers everything OK and nothing excellently. Our menus are shorter, more focused, and the bartender will customise. You get more interesting drinks for similar money.

3. Easier exit. Leaving the mall after 22:00 means a slow drive out of the multi-storey carpark plus the toll on the LDP. Leaving a street-level bar means walking to your car and being on the road in 90 seconds.

If you are in 1Utama earlier in the day

The combination that works well for our Bandar Utama-resident regulars:

17:00 to 18:30: finish at the mall, drive over, beat the dinner traffic.

18:30 to 21:00: drinks and a snack at our bar.

21:00 onward: either dinner nearby (Damansara Kim has several good options) or back home.

For mall day-trippers from elsewhere in PJ, the "drive 12 minutes to a serious cocktail bar after the mall" routine has become common enough that we recognise faces.

Other neighbourhoods on the same drive

The 1Utama-to-Damansara Kim route passes through:

  • Bandar Utama: origin point.
  • Mutiara Damansara: 5 minutes from 1Utama.
  • Damansara Utama (Uptown PJ): 8 minutes from 1Utama.
  • Damansara Kim: 12 minutes (us).
  • TTDI: 15 minutes via a small detour.
  • SS2: 15 minutes via Section 17.

If you are pairing dinner with drinks, Damansara Utama has good Japanese, Korean, and Thai options that work for a pre-drink meal. Damansara Kim itself has a strong Cantonese coffee shop and a couple of Western brunch spots.

Public transport from 1Utama

1Utama has its own MRT station (Bandar Utama, MRT Kajang Line). From there to Damansara Kim is a 7-minute Grab. To SS2 is a 10-minute Grab. The walk is not feasible at night.

From Bandar Utama MRT, Grab fares are typically RM 8-12 to either bar.

Hours, in case you are planning

Dissolved Solids: Tue-Thu 15:00-00:00, Fri-Sat 14:00-01:00, Sun 14:00-00:00. Mon closed.

Soluble Solids: Wed-Sun 18:00-01:00. Mon-Tue closed.

If you finish at 1Utama on a Monday, neither bar is open. Tuesday-Sunday, we are pouring.

The summary

1Utama is a great mall and a mediocre cocktail destination. The serious drinks are 12-15 minutes away. The drive is short, the parking is easier than the mall, and the rooms are built for drinking rather than for absorbing mall traffic. The trade-off is firmly in favour of the drive.

Frequently asked questions

What's the closest serious cocktail bar to 1Utama?

Dissolved Solids in Damansara Kim, a 12-minute drive off-peak (16 minutes during Friday-evening traffic). Exit 1Utama via LDP toward Bandar Sunway, take the Damansara Utama exit, two left turns into SS20. Soluble Solids in SS2 is 15 minutes via the same route continuing south through Section 17. Both have free street parking after 18:00.

Why not just drink at a bar inside 1Utama?

Three reasons. Mall bars absorb foot traffic; dedicated cocktail bars are quieter. Mall lounges keep long generic drinks lists; dedicated bars run shorter, more focused menus and customise. Leaving the mall after 22:00 means a slow drive out of a multi-storey carpark plus LDP toll; leaving a street-level bar means walking to your car and being on the road in 90 seconds.

What's the best way to get from 1Utama to a PJ cocktail bar?

Drive if you can park (Damansara Kim has free street parking after 18:00). Otherwise, Grab from Bandar Utama MRT to Dissolved Solids is RM 8 to 12 and takes 7 minutes. The walk is not feasible at night. The combination that works for Bandar Utama regulars is to finish at the mall by 18:30, drive over, beat the dinner traffic, drinks until 21:00.

Can I substitute a Bangsar bar for a Bandar Utama drive?

For some occasions yes; Bangsar is the next-nearest serious cocktail neighbourhood, 18 minutes from 1Utama versus 12 to Damansara Kim. Bangsar wins on walking-distance density (multiple bars in one block). Damansara Kim and SS2 win on parking, quieter rooms, and lower prices. The honest answer depends on whether you want one drink-focused evening (PJ) or a multi-bar crawl (Bangsar).
