1 May is the cleanest public holiday on the calendar. It moves with the weekday, often landing on a Friday or Thursday for a long weekend. The day is functionally a Sunday: most offices closed, traffic light, the city in its slow-Sunday breathing pattern. The cocktail plan for Labour Day is "long, slow, no work tomorrow either."
Labour Day in the Malaysian context
Labour Day (Hari Pekerja) on 1 May is a federal public holiday in Malaysia, observed across the country as International Workers' Day. The Malaysian observance is low-key compared to the parade traditions of other countries: there is no civic procession on the scale of Merdeka, no fireworks. The day exists as a recognition of workers' rights, and most Malaysians treat it as a long-weekend bonus.
What this means for an evening cocktail visit on 1 May in KL:
- Labour Day always falls 1 May. Long weekend if it lands Thursday or Friday in a given year.
- KL traffic is light. Grabs are quicker than usual. Parking in the city is available.
- Most restaurants and bars run normal hours. Some bars run small Labour Day specials, most do not.
- Klang Valley middle class often travels for the long weekend (Penang, Langkawi, Bali, Bandung); KL feels emptier than a normal weekend.
- The remaining crowd skews toward couples, small friend groups, and locals doing a slow-paced day-off.
This is the most underrated bar night of the year in the Klang Valley. Same craft programmes, fewer people in the room.
Why our two PJ bars work for Labour Day
If KL feels empty (it usually does on Labour Day), the small-bar scene in PJ is even better suited to long-session drinking. Quieter rooms, smaller crowds, the bartender has more time to talk you through the build.
Dissolved Solids · 43-1 Jalan SS20/11, Damansara Kim: small upstairs bar above MyNews, about 30 seats, Tue-Sun 15:00 to 01:00. Bar-counter seating is the right perch for a long session. Printed menu runs across classics, Malaysian-local, and house signatures. Listed as one of Tatler Asia Top 20 Bars 2025/26. Opens at 15:00, which is the right slot for a Labour Day afternoon start.
Soluble Solids · 50-1 Jalan SS2/24: small room, Wed-Sun 18:00 to 01:00, no printed list. Tell the bartender it is a long sit, ask for three drinks paced across the evening. Opens at 18:00, better for a continuing-from-dinner sit rather than an afternoon kickoff. If 1 May falls on a Monday or Tuesday in a given year, Soluble Solids is closed; Dissolved Solids picks up the day.
Two states (Damansara Kim, SS2), one chemistry. The afternoon-to-late-evening arc works at both, with Dissolved Solids opening earlier for the afternoon-into-evening sit.
What to order on Labour Day
Labour Day is the right night for a long session. Not "many drinks" long, just "stay in the same seat across several hours" long. This is the kind of night a craft cocktail bar is built for. Order across three flavour zones:
Long-session opener (afternoon, light, refreshing): Roselle Spritz, Pandan Collins, Calamansi Highball, Hugo Spritz, French 75. Low-ABV-coded, long ice, easy to nurse.
Middle session (evening, stirred, considered): Negroni, Manhattan, Sazerac, Vieux Carre, Old Fashioned. Spirit-forward, slow-evolving. The drink rewards a slow afternoon.
Late session (post-dinner, dark, long-finish): Espresso Martini, Brandy Alexander, Gula Melaka Old Fashioned, Smoky Mezcal Old Fashioned. Closer drinks for the long sit.
Five specific drinks worth ordering on a Labour Day:
Roselle Spritz: roselle (hibiscus) syrup, lime, gin, cava. Long-drink Malaysian. Recipe.
French 75: gin, lemon, sugar, champagne. Celebratory but not over-the-top. The right "I have the day off" opener.
Negroni: gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, stirred. Bitter, balanced, very serious-drink-coded. Working guide.
Gula Melaka Old Fashioned: bourbon stirred over Malaysian palm sugar with bitters. Caramel-dark, considered. Recipe.
Espresso Martini: properly made, with fresh espresso. The post-dinner closer.
The Labour Day session also rewards the build-your-own format. Tell the bartender it is a long sit and ask them to pace you across three drinks, light to dark.
The evening plan
Labour Day works in a longer arc than a normal night out. Six to eight hours from afternoon opener to last call, in three movements.
Afternoon, 3pm to 5pm: a light first drink with a friend. Spritz territory. Roselle Spritz, Hugo Spritz, Aperol Spritz. Dissolved Solids opens at 15:00, which makes it the natural afternoon kickoff.
Early evening, 5pm to 7pm: walk somewhere for dinner, or stay at the bar with snacks. Bring outside food if the bar allows it (both PJ outlets do).
Evening, 8pm to 10pm: second drink. Something stirred and considered. Old Fashioned, Negroni, Boulevardier.
Optional third, 10pm to 11pm: something for the long-session pace. A digestif, a properly made Espresso Martini, an after-dinner brandy. Both PJ outlets run to 01:00.
Reservations
Labour Day is a quiet night at most KL cocktail bars. The popular restaurant-bars (especially the rooftop and hotel-bar ones) fill earlier. Independent craft bars usually have walk-in space. Two days ahead is enough notice. For groups of 4 or more, WhatsApp ahead.

For non-drinking guests
Labour Day catches a lot of friends-and-family groups where one person is not drinking that day. The NA programme to ask for:
- NA Roselle Spritz: roselle syrup, lime, soda. Looks the part.
- NA Hugo Spritz: elderflower cordial, mint, lime, soda.
- NA Negroni: Seedlip Grove, NA Campari substitute, NA vermouth substitute.
- Kombucha by the glass: when we have a fresh batch.
- Coffee mocktails: Black Honey, Floral Mango, Peach Blossom.
- Proper espresso, AeroPress, or loose-leaf tea: the afternoon pace makes the non-alcoholic experience properly enjoyable rather than rushed.
Brief the bartender when you arrive. Glassware matches the alcoholic side; the round lands together.
