Puchong is one of the largest suburban townships in Selangor, anchored by IOI Mall and stretching south through Bandar Kinrara, Setia Walk, and Bandar Puteri all the way to the Cyberjaya edge. Strong dining scene (bak kut teh, Cantonese seafood, dim sum, mamak corners), but a thin specialty cocktail-bar scene. For Puchong residents who want a serious cocktail evening, the 22 to 28 minute drive north into central PJ is the most reliable answer.

Our two bars from Puchong

Dissolved Solids, Damansara Kim. 43-1 Jalan SS20/11, 47400 PJ. Open Tuesday to Sunday. Maps · WhatsApp +60 11-4008 7607

Soluble Solids, SS2. 50-1 Jalan SS2/24, 47300 PJ. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 18:00 onwards. Maps · WhatsApp +60 11-1682 8651

The drive is one direction: straight north on the LDP. From Bandar Kinrara at the northern edge of Puchong it is a 22-minute uninterrupted run to the Damansara Utama exit, then a two-minute side-road drop to Dissolved Solids. From IOI Mall and Setia Walk, add three to five minutes. Soluble Solids is one interchange further north at Section 17, adding three minutes of drive time and a slightly busier final approach. The LDP is mostly highway-grade and the route requires no toll plaza dance, just a steady northbound run with the Sunway Pyramid and Subang Jaya passing by on the left.

The character of Puchong

Puchong runs along the LDP corridor on a north-south axis, divided into named sub-townships. Bandar Puchong Jaya and IOI Mall area are the older commercial-residential core, with the densest food scene and the bulk of the F and B. Bandar Kinrara and Taman Kinrara are mid-tier residential blocks to the east. Bandar Puteri Puchong and Bandar Puchong Utama are the newer southern developments. Setia Walk is the outdoor-mall-and-condo cluster between the two.

Food is genuinely deep in Puchong, bak kut teh around IOI Mall, the Cantonese seafood shoplots through Bandar Puchong Jaya, dim sum at the older kopitiams, late-night mamaks across most of the township. The drinking scene is mostly chain bars, gastropubs, and karaoke lounges; the small specialist cocktail-bar format (50-seat room, 60-bottle back bar, fresh-cut citrus, customised builds) is rare inside Puchong itself.

The Puchong evening rhythm is shaped by the suburban-residential mix and the mall-anchored commercial layout. A typical Friday for a Puchong couple or four-person group begins with dinner at one of the IOI Mall row restaurants, Setia Walk outdoor seating, or a Bandar Puchong Jaya seafood shoplot. The meal often runs long with rice, sides and at least a round of Tiger beer; the table clears by 21:00. From there the split is familiar: some groups stay for a second round at the restaurant or move to a nearby karaoke lounge, others migrate to a chain gastropub, and the dedicated cocktail-bar contingent point the car north on the LDP. The drive is short enough to feel routine on a Friday or Saturday night, and the parking situation at the PJ end is a significant upgrade over the IOI Mall multi-storey hunt.

Why drive north for the drink

Puchong's commercial real estate is mostly mall-anchored or shoplot-anchored; both formats favour higher-volume venues over small specialist rooms. A serious cocktail bar trades volume for craft and needs the surrounding dinner density of PJ's older corridors (SS2, Damansara Kim, Section 17). The LDP gives Puchong a fast direct route north, which makes the trade worth it.

For most of Puchong, our PJ outlets are nearly as quick as driving to the KLCC corridor, and the parking situation is much easier (free street parking, no RM 15 to 20 mall fee, no hunting for a slot). That tilts the maths toward PJ for the Puchong-resident evening.

Drive times from Puchong

  • Bandar Kinrara: 22 minutes to Dissolved Solids, 25 to Soluble Solids.
  • Bandar Puchong Jaya: 23 minutes / 26.
  • IOI Mall Puchong: 25 minutes / 28.
  • Setia Walk: 25 minutes / 28.
  • Bandar Puteri Puchong: 27 minutes / 30.
  • Puchong Utama: 28 minutes / 30.
  • Pusat Bandar Puchong: 24 minutes / 27.
  • Taman Puchong Perdana: 26 minutes / 29.

The route is straightforward: take the LDP northbound all the way. Exit at Damansara Utama for Dissolved Solids, or continue one more interchange north to Section 17 for Soluble Solids. The LDP is mostly highway-grade and predictable; off-peak the drive is a single uninterrupted run.

Friday evening 17:30 to 19:00 the LDP northbound through Sunway and Subang Jaya is the slow stretch; budget 35 minutes from southern Puchong. After 19:30 the traffic clears and the drive is back to 22 to 28 minutes. Saturday afternoon is the cleanest window.

The Sri Petaling line runs through Puchong; from Pusat Bandar Puchong, IOI Puchong Jaya, or Taman Perindustrian Puchong stations, ride south to Putra Heights, cross-platform change to the Kelana Jaya line, and ride north to Taman Bahagia. From there an 8 minute Grab to either bar. About 60 minutes total, realistic if everyone in the group wants to drink.

Grab fares from Puchong: RM 28 to 42 to either bar.

Signature drinks worth the drive

Most Puchong-resident regulars order at least one signature on first arrival rather than defaulting to a Negroni they could find at any chain bar. The house signatures at Dissolved Solids cluster around Malaysian ingredients built with classical bar technique. Start with the Kopi Sour (whisky, freshly brewed kopi-O, gula melaka, lemon, egg-white foam): an opener that reads as both familiar and unmistakably local. Then the Pandan Collins (gin, fresh pandan leaf, lime, soda), useful as a palate cleaner after Cantonese seafood. The Scented Negroni is the bitter-led pick, recently refreshed with a local botanical layer, and cuts through richness well after a wok-fried dinner. The Gula Melaka Old Fashioned swaps demerara for Malaysian palm sugar. The Calamansi Highball is the lightest signature, suited to a second-round if the first drink was heavier. The Local Tropic is the lightest tropical of the menu.

At Soluble Solids the format is different: there is no printed list. Tell the bartender three short answers (strength, spirit you usually reach for, flavour direction) and the drink is built in front of you from the wall of labelled infusion jars. The flagship build is The Tesseract, a multi-spirit signature treatment the bar pours as a counter-experience for guests who order "surprise me." After a Puchong bak kut teh or Cantonese seafood dinner, "something medium, whisky, smoky" tends to land well as the opening order.

Parking on arrival

Parking is one of the more concrete advantages of the PJ format for a Puchong driver who is tired of the IOI Mall and Setia Walk multi-storey hunt. Dissolved Solids sits inside the Damansara Kim grid, a low-rise residential and shoplot block where free street parking runs the length of Jalan SS20/11 and the surrounding side roads. On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings you will usually find a slot directly outside; Friday and Saturday after 20:00 expect a one to three minute walk from a slot in the adjacent residential row. No fee, no boom-gate, no RM 15 to 20 mall fee, no ticket validation.

Soluble Solids sits on the SS2 row near the wet market and food court. Free street parking is available along Jalan SS2/24 and the adjacent SS2 lanes. The SS2 wet-market public lot two minutes' walk away is the reliable overflow after 19:00 when the row fills. From a Puchong driver's perspective, the parking calculus is simple: the drive north on the LDP replaces a 10-minute hunt at any Puchong mall.

Typical evening expectations

Both rooms are small (around 40 to 50 seats) and operate at conversation-level volume rather than club-volume. The music sits at a low-mid level: vinyl and curated playlists at Dissolved Solids leaning toward bossa, jazz and dub; Soluble Solids runs a more eclectic mix sometimes including slowed Mandopop or local indie. Neither room has a dance floor and neither operates a guest-list or a queue. The lighting is warm and low rather than dim-and-moody.

For a Puchong group stepping out of a long Cantonese dinner, the contrast is the point: a quieter, slower room after a loud full meal. The bar guests around you will be a mix of PJ residents, Damansara couples, post-dinner groups of four or six, and a steady flow of cross-town visitors from Sunway, Subang Jaya and the southern suburbs. Conversation is the dominant register; you should be able to hear the person across the table without raising your voice. The typical seated stay is 90 to 120 minutes for two to three drinks, stretching to 150 minutes for an unhurried Friday or Saturday evening.

Getting back to Puchong after

The drive back via the LDP is fast post-midnight, 18 to 24 minutes with no traffic. Police checkpoints occasionally operate on the LDP Friday and Saturday nights; never drive after a drink. Grab is reliable for the return at 01:00 but typically surge-priced on weekends (budget RM 35 to 55 back).
