A private event at a cocktail bar is a useful answer when the formats above (group hangout, birthday, anniversary) become too big for the regular reservation flow. You have 20+ guests, you want the room to yourselves, and you want the bar to make drinks at the standard you would order off the regular menu. Both KL and PJ have small bars that handle this. Here is the working format, the typical cost structure, and how to brief us so the night lands the way you have imagined it.
When a private event makes sense
The decision to book a full buyout rather than a group reservation usually hinges on three factors: group size, the need for room privacy, and the level of customisation. You probably want a full or partial bar buyout when:
- Group size is 15-50 people. Below 15, a group reservation usually works better. Above 50, you probably need a hotel ballroom.
- You want the room private (no other customers seated nearby). The kind of event where private conversations need to happen, or where the host wants to make a toast without competing with the next table.
- You want a custom menu (a tailored cocktail list, custom drink for the host, branded drinks). The kind of event where the drinks themselves are part of the story.
- The event has a fixed timing (e.g. "8pm to 11pm, exclusive use"). The kind of event where guests will arrive in a wave and the bar needs to be ready.
- Corporate sponsors, brand activations, product launches. The kind of event where the room serves as a venue rather than just a bar.
- A wedding rehearsal dinner, a "thank you to the team" night, a milestone birthday. The kind of event where the room belongs to the host for the evening.
What a buyout typically includes
The standard buyout package at most KL craft cocktail bars covers the venue, the staff, the drinks, the music programming, and basic snacks. Specifically:
- Exclusive use of the room for the agreed window (typically 4-5 hours). The bar closes to walk-ins during your window.
- The full cocktail programme available, plus any custom drinks briefed in advance. Guests order from the regular menu, the custom menu, or both.
- The bartender(s) dedicated to your group. For 30+ guests, two bartenders is the typical setup so the drinks don't queue.
- The music programming coordinated to the event (we can run our usual or fit a specific brief). Volume can be tuned to "background" or "energy", as needed.
- Bar snacks at the standard menu or, for an additional charge, a catered food spread through partner kitchens.
- Branded materials on request (custom napkins, recipe cards for the night, a small printed cocktail menu). Lead time matters here; 3-4 weeks ahead for branded printing.
- Music or AV support for speeches or toasts on request. We have a small PA system; for larger setups (DJ, projection, microphones beyond a single handheld) we coordinate with external suppliers.
What a buyout typically costs
The standard structure across KL craft cocktail bars is a minimum spend, not a flat rental fee. We hold the room for you against a minimum that reflects the regular revenue we would expect for that night. If the guests order enough drinks to hit the minimum, no further fee. If not, the difference is charged.
Minimums vary by night (weekends cost more, often 1.5-2x weeknight rates), capacity (a 40-seat room carries a different minimum than a 20-seat room), and the catering involved (full canape service adds, depending on the menu). WhatsApp for a quote with the date, group size, and event description.
A rough working range for KL small-bar buyouts in 2026: RM 4,000-8,000 minimum for a weeknight 15-30 guest event at a small craft bar, RM 8,000-15,000 for a Friday-Saturday 30-50 guest event, RM 15,000+ for the larger rooftop and hotel venues. PJ rates run 20-30% lower for equivalent rooms.
The KL private-event landscape
KL has several bars that handle 30-100 person buyouts: rooftop bars, hotel bars, the mid-sized cocktail-bar-restaurants. The trade-off is between size and intimacy. The bigger the bar, the larger the buyout has to be to justify the rental, and the more the drink standard tends to slip under the volume.
Small craft bars (20-40 seats) handle 20-30 person buyouts well. The room feels full, the bartender can dedicate attention, and the drink standard does not drop. This is the sweet spot for milestone birthdays, hen nights, intimate corporate events, and the "we want it to feel like our place for the night" brief.
Mid-sized cocktail bars (50-80 seats) handle 40-70 guest buyouts. The room feels less personal but the format scales better. Useful for product launches and brand activations where the guest list runs deeper than the personal-event format.
Larger venues (rooftop bars, hotel lounges) handle 80-200 guest buyouts. The minimum spends are correspondingly higher, the drink quality is typically operationally consistent rather than craft-led, and the event takes on a more formal character. Useful for corporate galas and the larger end of the wedding-adjacent market.
How to brief us
For a private event, WhatsApp with:
- Date, start time, expected end time.
- Group size (and likely range, e.g. "25 confirmed, possibly up to 35").
- Event type (birthday, wedding rehearsal, corporate year-end, brand activation, friends-only).
- Whether food is needed (we can do canapes or bar snacks; full dinner needs catering through partner kitchens).
- Whether you want a custom menu or branded drinks.
- Music preferences (we run a default playlist of mid-tempo soul, jazz, and bossa; we can adjust to fit a brief).
- Any "must-have" guest names, allergies, non-drinkers, dietary requirements.
- Budget range or whether you want us to quote against the minimum spend.
- Any AV needs (microphone for a toast, projection screen, music from a DJ rather than the house playlist).
We will respond within 24 hours with a proposed format, the minimum spend, and confirmation of availability.
The custom drink menu
For private events we can build a 4-6 drink tailored menu for the night. The brief: the kind of evening, any flavours or ingredients you love, anything you want to avoid, and any "signature" drink for the host or honouree.
The custom menu is printed in small recipe-card format, named for the event (e.g. "Anna and Jay's drinks for 14 May"), and the bartender opens the night by presenting it to your guests. The format adds personalisation without overstating it; guests notice that the drinks are specific to the host without the menu feeling overproduced.
This costs nothing extra (it is part of how we work) but it does require 2-3 weeks lead time so we can build and trial the drinks. The trial itself often becomes a small pre-event tasting for the host, which is its own thing.
What our two bars offer for this intent
For smaller, more intimate buyouts (15-30 people), our two PJ outlets are excellent. The rooms are smaller, the prices lower, and you get the same standard of craft cocktail.
Dissolved Solids · Damansara Kim: small upstairs bar at 43-1 Jalan SS20/11. Capacity 30 seated, up to 40 with standing. Best for buyouts of 18-35 guests. Warm-lit, conversation-volume, with a long table and bar-counter sections that can be configured for the night. The upstairs location keeps the room private from street-level foot traffic.
Soluble Solids · SS2: smaller still, at 50-1 Jalan SS2/24. Capacity 20 seated, up to 25 with standing. Best for buyouts of 12-22 guests. The bespoke-build format suits intimate events particularly well; the room reads as a parlour rather than a bar when bought out.
For both outlets, full-room buyouts typically run Tuesday-Thursday on weeknight rates and Friday-Saturday with higher minimum spend. Sunday-Monday windows are negotiable for off-format events.
Common event formats we handle
Milestone birthdays (30, 40, 50, 60). The most common buyout format. Custom menu named for the birthday person, a signature "birthday drink", typically 4-5 hours with the bar running mid-tempo through the evening and lifting into the toast.
Wedding rehearsal dinners and "thank you to the family" nights. Smaller groups (15-25), early-evening format (7-10pm), often paired with a catered dinner at a nearby restaurant.
Hen and stag nights. The format we handle most carefully. The brief usually wants energy without chaos, custom drinks named with the hen or stag's signature, and the bar staffed to absorb the group's pace.
Corporate year-end and "thanks team" events. Typical group size 15-40, format 6-9pm, often paired with a custom-drinks-by-team activity (each team picks a flavour profile, the bartender builds the drink). Lands well as a year-end gesture.
Brand activations and product launches. Often shorter (2-3 hours), with branded materials, music tuned to the brand, and a custom cocktail that ties to the product. Lead time matters more here; 4-6 weeks ideal for full-brand fit.
Book launches and exhibition openings. Format wants gentle volume, longer drinks (spritzes, highballs), and a custom drink named for the book or show.
