Thanksgiving in Malaysia is an expat-and-curious-friends affair. The fourth Thursday of November is not a public holiday here. American expats in KL who want to mark the date either host a dinner at home, attend an embassy-coordinated event, or coordinate a casual gathering at a restaurant or bar. For the small-bar version of the third option, here is the working plan.
Thanksgiving in the Malaysian context
Thanksgiving is observed in two countries: in the US on the fourth Thursday of November, and in Canada on the second Monday of October. Neither is a Malaysian public holiday. The Malaysian observance is entirely expat-driven, with two main configurations:
- Home dinner. American or Canadian expat hosts a turkey dinner at home for 6 to 20 people. Most common format; requires a working-size oven, a sourced turkey, and a substantial day of cooking.
- Hotel restaurant Thanksgiving menu. RM 200 to 400 per head for a 4-course set with wine pairing. Works for the dinner-out option; the cocktails on the side tend to be afterthoughts.
- Friendsgiving format. Saturday gathering of friends rather than strict-Thursday. More common in KL than the strict-date version because Thursday is a working day. Mixed-nationality friend groups gather at restaurants, bars, or homes.
Three honest things about Thanksgiving in KL specifically:
- Turkey is expensive and not commonly available. Cold Storage and Mercato stock frozen whole turkeys in November for RM 300 to 600 per bird. Most KL ovens are too small to roast a 6kg bird; common substitutes are turkey breast roasted, or chicken-and-trimmings on the same template.
- The day itself is a normal Thursday in Malaysia. Most American expats either take leave or move the dinner to the Saturday after.
- The expat crowd is smaller than for Christmas; Thanksgiving gatherings tend to be more intimate, 6 to 12 people, with closer friends rather than wider social circles.
Why our two PJ bars work for a Friendsgiving
The small-bar Friendsgiving is the right format if you have done the home dinner and want a separate cocktail-and-friends evening on the long weekend, or if you want a low-effort group gathering without the host load of a home dinner.
Dissolved Solids · 43-1 Jalan SS20/11, Damansara Kim: small upstairs bar above MyNews, about 30 seats, Tue-Sun 15:00 to 01:00. Bourbon, rye, and aged-rum shelf is full and well-stocked through the November Thanksgiving window. Listed as one of Tatler Asia Top 20 Bars 2025/26. Outside food welcome for leftover-turkey bring-in.
Soluble Solids · 50-1 Jalan SS2/24: smaller, no printed menu, Wed-Sun 18:00 to 01:00. The bespoke-build format suits a "make me a Thanksgiving-themed drink with the pumpkin-spice syrup" request, or for a small intimate Friendsgiving of 4 to 6 people who want the bartender to lead.
Two states (Damansara Kim, SS2), one chemistry. Pick the room that fits the group size.
What to order on Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving food (turkey, gravy, cranberry, sweet potato, stuffing, pumpkin pie) leans rich, savoury, and slightly sweet. Cocktails worth ordering through the weekend pull from the American whisky tradition and the autumn flavour palette.
Maple Old Fashioned: bourbon, pure maple syrup, aromatic bitters. Maple is the Thanksgiving sweetener; the maple-bourbon pairing is a working classic. The first drink to order.
Old Fashioned (bourbon, with the orange peel expressed properly): the single most appropriate Thanksgiving cocktail. American, spirit-forward, structurally autumnal. Recipe.
Brown Derby: bourbon, fresh grapefruit, honey syrup. The 1930s American classic. Pairs well with turkey.
Hot Toddy: aged rum or bourbon, hot water, lemon, honey, clove, cinnamon. The American winter classic; works in KL air-conditioning even if not winter outside.
Hot Buttered Rum: aged rum, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, hot water. Another American winter classic. Unusual enough that the bartender's explanation becomes part of the experience.
Manhattan: rye, sweet vermouth, Angostura. The other American classic. Reads autumnal. Recipe.
Pumpkin-Spice Old Fashioned (seasonal special): bourbon stirred with a small dose of pumpkin-spice syrup (we make ours with real pumpkin purée, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger). Ask the bartender; this is a Thanksgiving-week pour, not a permanent menu item.
New York Sour: whiskey sour with a red wine float. Autumn-coloured, photogenic, structurally American. Recipe.
Mulled Wine Cocktail: red wine warmed with cinnamon, clove, orange peel, sugar; finished with a touch of bourbon. The European winter wine adapted for a Thanksgiving round.
The evening plan
Two formats work for the bar-led Thanksgiving:
Saturday Friendsgiving, 7pm to 10pm: the most common format. Gather 4 to 8 friends; drinks at the bar; food either before at a nearby restaurant or brought-in. Open with a Maple Old Fashioned; middle round with a Brown Derby or New York Sour; close with a Hot Buttered Rum (the bartender's explanation makes it a small ceremony).
Thursday Thanksgiving evening, 8pm to 11pm: less common but valid if you want to mark the actual date. Both outlets are open. Quieter than the Saturday version. A good night for an intimate group of 4 to 6 with the home dinner already done.
Last call is 01:00 at both outlets. The Grab back to KLCC at midnight is light traffic, 22 to 28 minutes on a Thursday or Saturday.
Reservations
WhatsApp ahead for groups of 5+. Specify "Thanksgiving gathering" so the bartender prepares the rye-and-bourbon shelf and the maple syrup pre-made. For Saturday Friendsgivings, book 5 to 7 days ahead because the Saturday-night spot is moderate-traffic regardless of Thanksgiving.

For non-drinking guests
For Muslim friends, sober friends, or kids in your Thanksgiving group:
- NA bandung: rose syrup, milk, ice. Adjacent to a creamy pumpkin-pie note.
- NA spiced apple: apple juice, cinnamon syrup, clove infusion, soda. Thanksgiving-coded.
- NA maple coffee mocktail: espresso, maple, milk, ice. Almost a dessert in a glass.
- NA Hot Toddy: hot water, honey, lemon, clove, cinnamon. Same warming format as the alcoholic version.
- Proper hot tea or coffee: jasmine, masala chai, AeroPress brew. Pairs with leftover pumpkin pie.
- Kombucha by the glass: when in stock.
Brief us when you book. The round comes out balanced for everyone.
For mixed groups including non-American friends
Most expat Thanksgivings in KL include Malaysian and other-nationality friends who do not have the cultural attachment. The drinks above work as "good American-coded cocktails" regardless of the holiday context. Easy entry points for non-American friends:
- Maple Old Fashioned: a good introduction to maple syrup as a cocktail ingredient.
- New York Sour: photogenic and easy to explain.
- Hot Buttered Rum: unusual enough that the bartender's explanation becomes part of the experience.
- Pumpkin-Spice Old Fashioned: the closest thing to "the flavour of America in November" in a coupe.
For groups bringing leftover Thanksgiving food
Outside food is welcome at both outlets. If you have leftover turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, or pumpkin pie from your home Thanksgiving, you can bring it to the bar for a continued gathering. The bartender will plate it on small dishes if asked.
The cocktail pairing with leftover turkey works particularly well because the food has been resting and developing flavour; the second-day Thanksgiving sandwich-and-bourbon situation is its own little tradition for many expats.
