"Cocktail workshop KL" is a high-volume search query that few Malaysian bars actually answer well. The market is fragmented across hotel chains, hospitality schools, private-event hosts, and ad-hoc bartender-led classes. This page maps the working categories and where ours fits.

The four kinds of cocktail workshop in KL

1. Hospitality-school courses. Berjaya University College, Sunway University Hospitality, and a few private schools (Bar Academy KL, EHL Hospitality Business School affiliates) run professional bartending courses. 6-12 weeks, RM 1,500-4,000, certificate-track. Aimed at people who want to enter the industry.

2. Hotel bar masterclasses. Four Seasons KL, The St. Regis KL, EQ Kuala Lumpur, and a few of the W Hotel-adjacent bars run periodic 2-3 hour masterclasses. RM 200-400 per person, often paired with dinner. Aimed at hotel guests and corporate clients.

3. Private-event cocktail classes. Most craft cocktail bars in KL will host private group classes for 6-15 people. RM 80-200 per person depending on the venue, spirit included. Aimed at hen nights, corporate teams, anniversaries, birthdays.

4. Online cocktail classes. Malaysian-led classes on Eventbrite, Klook, MAEPS programmes. Variable. Often more theatre than craft.

What a good cocktail workshop teaches

A 2-3 hour cocktail workshop should cover:

  • Three foundational templates: the Sour, the Stirred, the Built. With these three, you can construct most classic cocktails.
  • Three core skills: shaking, stirring, garnishing. Done properly. Most home bartenders shake too long and stir too short.
  • Ratio fundamentals: the 2:1:1 sour ratio. The 60ml/15ml stirred ratio. The 1:2 / 1:3 highball spectrum.
  • Ice theory: why size matters, why clarity matters, how to make better ice at home.
  • Three drinks to build hands-on: typically one Sour, one Stirred, one Built. Each participant builds and tastes their own.

Our private cocktail workshop format

We host private group cocktail workshops at both Dissolved Solids (Damansara Kim) and Soluble Solids (SS2). Available on request for groups of 6-15 people.

Format:

  • 2.5 hours, weeknight or weekend afternoon (closed hours, so you have the bar to yourself)
  • Foundation lesson: the three cocktail templates + the three skills
  • Three drinks built by each guest (one of each template)
  • Malaysian-local component: each guest also builds a pandan, gula melaka, or kopi-based drink
  • Take-home: simple syrup recipe card + the 2:1:1 sour ratio printed reference

Pricing: RM 150 per person for groups of 6-10. RM 130 per person for groups of 10-15. Includes all ingredients, glassware, take-home reference card, and a single cocktail of choice after the class.

Format variations available:

  • Non-alcoholic workshop (mocktail focus, same RM 130-150 pricing)
  • Malaysian-only workshop (all four drinks built on local ingredients)
  • Whisky-tasting + cocktail workshop hybrid (RM 200 per person, includes 4-spirit flight)

What to expect at a private session

The bar opens to your group only. The bartender walks you through the foundations standing at the bar while you watch the first build. Then each guest builds their own. Then taste, compare, repeat with the next template. Total time: 2.5 hours including a small break.

The drinks you build are yours to drink. The bar's regular menu is also available; some workshops finish with each guest ordering one more drink off the regular list.

How to book

WhatsApp either outlet directly. We will check availability (workshops are typically Wednesday afternoons or Sunday early-evening; we close to public during the session). Book 2-4 weeks in advance for group dates.

Alternatives we recommend

If a private workshop is overkill for your group:

  • Sit at the bar at either outlet during a normal service. Tell the bartender you want to learn. We give bar-side mini-tutorials free during quiet windows.
  • Try the drink builder at home, build the result yourself, then come in and compare ours.
  • Read the sour template, the stirred vs shaken piece, and the how to order a cocktail piece. Free, comprehensive, in our voice.
