Most KL and PJ cocktail bars do not have a written dress code. What this actually means in practice: you have more freedom than you think, but a small amount of effort goes a long way. Here is the working answer for the two outlets and the wider Klang Valley cocktail scene.
The general rule
"KL casual" works almost everywhere. This is the local default, smart-casual but not formal. The Malaysian climate makes anything heavier impractical; the cocktail-bar scene rewards interesting clothing over expensive clothing.
Specifically, both our bars (and most other PJ cocktail bars) will happily seat anyone in:
- A nice t-shirt or shirt and chinos / nice jeans.
- A blouse or top and skirt / trousers / jeans.
- A linen shirt or kebaya-inspired top, anything that reads as "I picked this for going out".
Three combinations that always work
1. Smart-casual minimum. Plain t-shirt, dark jeans, sneakers (white or minimalist). Watch optional. The PJ-evening uniform.
2. Slightly elevated. A button-down shirt (linen or oxford), chinos, leather sneakers or loafers. Or a simple dress with sandals. Reads as "I made an effort" without being formal.
3. Going-out clothes. A blazer over a t-shirt, dark trousers, leather shoes. Or a jumpsuit, statement earrings, low heels. This is the upper bound for nearly any PJ cocktail bar.
Three things to avoid
1. Sports clothing. Football jerseys, sportswear that signals "I just left the gym", flip-flops. Most cocktail bars will seat you but you will feel out of place.
2. Anything wet or damp. Raincoats over half-wet clothing during monsoon season. Bring a small umbrella; better than damp clothing for two hours.
3. Strong fragrance. Cocktail bars are small rooms with intense aromatics in the air (citrus oils, herbs, spirits). Strong cologne or perfume competes with what the bartender is trying to put in your glass and what other guests are trying to smell. Light scent is fine; heavy scent is rude.
Special cases
Coming from the gym. Sports clothing aside, both bars are accommodating if you came from a workout and want a drink. Quick change in the toilet is welcomed. Or come in athleisure that does not scream "post-workout".
Coming from work in business attire. Suits and blazers are fine. Tie optional. Sometimes overdressed for a Wednesday afternoon at the bar but never inappropriate.
Coming from a wedding. Yes, you can come straight from a wedding in formal wear. Both bars have hosted post-wedding drinks evenings. The room will work around you.
First date. See cocktail bar for a first date in PJ. Combination #2 (slightly elevated) is the safest choice.
Group celebration. Match the energy of the group. If it is a birthday and others are dressed up, dress up too. If it is a casual gathering, dress casually. The room reads more naturally when the group looks consistent.
The Malaysian climate consideration
Heavy fabrics (wool blazers, thick cotton chinos, leather jackets) are uncomfortable in 32-degree weather, even in air-conditioned rooms. Linen, light cotton, lightweight blends work better. A jacket that comes off easily helps once you sit down inside.
If you are coming from KL by Grab, you will arrive cool. If you walked in from street parking, you will arrive warmer than you expected. Build in a five-minute settle.
Religious and cultural considerations
Both bars welcome guests of all backgrounds. For Muslim guests, the non-alcoholic side of both menus is real and well-developed, see cocktail bar for non-drinkers. Traditional Malaysian dress (baju kurung, kebaya, baju Melayu) is always welcome and rather lovely in a bar context.
The bottom line
You probably do not need to overthink it. PJ cocktail bars are casual environments with serious drinks. If you would feel comfortable wearing your outfit to a nice restaurant for dinner, you can wear it to a cocktail bar. The bar will read you as someone who came to enjoy the evening, which is the only signal that matters.
If you are unsure, ask in the WhatsApp message when you reserve. We will tell you honestly what the room looks like that night.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a dress code at PJ cocktail bars?
Most KL and PJ cocktail bars do not have a written dress code. The local default is "KL casual": smart-casual but not formal. The Malaysian climate makes anything heavier impractical. Both Dissolved Solids and Soluble Solids will seat anyone in a nice t-shirt with chinos or jeans, a blouse with skirt or trousers, or a linen shirt. The bars reward interesting clothing over expensive clothing.
What should I wear for a first date at a cocktail bar?
The "slightly elevated" option is safest. A button-down shirt (linen or oxford) with chinos and leather sneakers or loafers, or a simple dress with sandals. It reads as "I made an effort" without being formal. Combination one (plain t-shirt and dark jeans) also works if your date is casual; combination three (blazer over t-shirt, leather shoes) if the date is higher-stakes.
Can I wear shorts and sandals to a cocktail bar?
Nice shorts and dressy sandals: yes, both bars will seat you, particularly on hot afternoons. Football jerseys, gym sportswear, flip-flops, or anything wet or damp: best avoided, you will feel out of place. Sneakers (white or minimalist) are fine and read as KL casual. Traditional Malaysian dress like baju kurung, kebaya, or baju Melayu is always welcome and rather lovely in a bar context.
What's the difference between dress expectations at PJ and KL bars?
PJ cocktail bars are slightly more casual than KL CBD or hotel bars but the spread is small. KL hotel bars (Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons) lean smart-casual minimum; KLCC mall bars are about the same as PJ. Both Dissolved Solids (43-1 Jalan SS20/11, Damansara Kim) and Soluble Solids (50-1 Jalan SS2/24) work with the same KL casual standard you would use anywhere in the Klang Valley.
Can I check the night's dress vibe before I arrive?
Yes. WhatsApp Dissolved Solids on +60 11-4008 7607 or Soluble Solids on +60 11-1682 8651 when you reserve and ask. We will tell you honestly what the room looks like that night, whether it is a quiet Tuesday with regulars in t-shirts or a Friday with a group celebration that has people slightly more dressed up. Light scent only, please: strong fragrance competes with the drinks.
