A cocktail bar is one of the better venues for a small celebration, but only if you set it up right. Booking last-minute for ten people on a Saturday and expecting it to work is a recipe for disappointment. Booking thoughtfully for the same group on a Wednesday with a heads-up to the bar is a different night entirely.

How big is your group

Group sizes break roughly into three categories at most PJ cocktail bars.

Four to six people: almost any cocktail bar can take you on a weeknight walk-in. Reservation is helpful but not strictly required. Standard service.

Seven to twelve: reservation required. Most small cocktail rooms (us included) can host this size with one to two days notice. The bar will assign a longer table or a section. Service is still standard but the bartender is expecting a focused effort on your party.

Thirteen and above: needs at least a week's notice. Some bars will take a partial-buyout (you take half the room) or full-buyout (you take the whole space). Pricing changes; pre-set drinks menus often become an option to keep service moving.

Pick the right night for your size

Bigger groups land better on quieter nights. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday are the easiest for groups of ten or more; we can give you the bartender's attention without the room being overwhelmed.

Friday and Saturday after 8pm are the busiest nights and the hardest to do a big group well. The bar is already at full pace; an extra ten orders coming in at once can slow service down. Possible, but plan early and arrive on time.

Public holiday eves: the busiest nights of the year. If your celebration falls on one, book at least two weeks ahead, accept that walk-in adjustments will be limited, and consider a pre-set drinks menu.

Pre-set menus and how they help

For groups of ten or more, we sometimes suggest a pre-set drinks menu. The idea: instead of every guest reading the full list and ordering individually (which slows down service by 20 to 40 minutes for a group), the group picks from a curated four-to-six-drink menu we pre-arranged with the host. The drinks land faster and the host knows the total spend.

A good pre-set menu has:

  • One gin drink (covers people who like clear spirits).
  • One whisky drink (covers people who like brown spirits).
  • One tropical or sweeter option.
  • One bitter or aperitivo option.
  • One non-alcoholic option.
  • Optionally, a "wildcard" specialty drink the bar is proud of.

Guests pick from this list as the night goes; nobody gets bored, nobody waits ten minutes for a complicated drink to be built.

Food considerations

Group cocktails alone are a recipe for fast intoxication and slow conversation. Most groups benefit from food in the mix.

Three approaches that work:

Eat before, then cocktails: dinner at a nearby restaurant followed by drinks. Lets the cocktail bar focus on what it does best (drinks) without the kitchen logistics. Both our rooms are within five minutes of multiple dinner spots.

Order in: tapau or Grab food to the bar. We welcome this at both rooms. Pizza and Asian street food both travel well. Tell us in advance so we set the table for plates.

Snacks menu plus cocktails: for shorter celebrations, the snacks at most cocktail bars are enough. Our snacks menu is short on purpose; it covers the gap without competing with the drinks.

Special occasion small things

Things we (and most bars) will happily do for a birthday or anniversary, if you ask in advance:

  • Reserve a quieter corner for the group.
  • Bring out a birthday cake the group brings (cakes are welcome at both our rooms with notice).
  • Play a specific song at a specific moment, if you want to make a small toast.
  • Pour a small "house" toast at the start of the evening (we will offer a small pour of something special on us; it costs us nothing and lands well).
  • Coordinate the bill discreetly if the host wants to handle payment without making it visible to guests.

What we will not do: large floral arrangements, balloons across the bar, surprise dance numbers. The cocktail bar is the venue; if you want elaborate decor, a private function room is a better fit.

Hen and stag nights specifically

We host these comfortably for groups of six to twelve. The vibe at a cocktail bar is different to a club: more conversation, more time, less spectacle. If your group wants loud nightclub energy, a cocktail bar is the wrong choice; we will say so kindly. If your group wants to gather, talk, drink well, and remember the night, a cocktail bar is one of the best venues you can pick.

If you are bringing the bride or groom to be: tell us. We will avoid the obvious cliches (no fluorescent veil, no sash, no penis straws) and instead suggest a slightly elevated drink for the guest of honour. Discretion is usually the right tone.

The reunion night

The hardest group to host well, in our experience. Reunions tend to have a mix of people who have not seen each other in years, varying drinking habits, sometimes mismatched expectations. Two things that help:

  • Use a pre-set drinks menu (or a starter round). Removes the decision pressure on people who do not regularly drink at cocktail bars.
  • Book a seated area, not a standing area. Sitting facilitates conversation; standing facilitates drinking faster. For a reunion, you want the former.

Cost expectations

Rough numbers for PJ cocktail bars in 2026:

  • Cocktails: RM 40 to 70 per drink. Most fall in the RM 45 to 55 range.
  • Snacks: RM 15 to 30 per shared plate.
  • Service charge: included by most cocktail bars (10%). Not all; check the bill.
  • Reservation deposit for large groups: some bars require RM 30 to 100 per head; deducted from your bill.

A group of ten doing two cocktails each plus a few snacks lands around RM 1,200 to 1,800. Three drinks each pushes that to RM 1,500 to 2,400. Plan accordingly.

One small ask

If you are planning a celebration with us, message ahead through WhatsApp on the reserve page. Give us the size, the date, the occasion, and any specific needs. We will hold the space, suggest a menu if useful, and make sure the night runs the way you want it to.
